“Simple Obedience”
“Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim.”
—John 2:7 (ESV)
Imagine having the opportunity of a lifetime placed in front of you—and letting it slip through your fingers because it didn’t make sense, seemed confusing, or simply made you afraid. In the story of Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana, the miracle itself hinged entirely on one thing: the obedience of the servants. Jesus gave a command that had no obvious logic. The solution He offered to the problem of running out of wine was to fill jars with water. It didn’t make practical sense. But the servants obeyed.
John 2:7 says they filled the jars to the brim. Then Jesus told them to draw some out and take it to the master of the feast. That was the moment of faith in action. Jesus was asking them to not just believe—He was asking them to do.
Could you imagine the risk they felt? The embarrassment if it didn’t work? They were already in a tense situation where the wine had run out. Now Jesus asks them to draw water and serve it as wine. He hadn’t performed any miracles yet—so there was no precedent for what was about to happen.
But there’s something powerful about the voice of Jesus. When you hear it and trust it, it gives you the confidence to simply obey—even when the command doesn’t make sense.
If the servants hadn’t obeyed, they would have missed being part of Jesus’ first recorded miracle. They would have missed the move of God in real time.
How often do we miss out because we’re waiting for it to “make sense” before we move?
What if Jesus is simply calling you to obey by faith and step into what doesn’t yet make sense? We often want understanding before obedience. But more often, it’s obedience that unlocks understanding. Simple obedience is the key. It doesn’t require full clarity—just trust in the one who speaks. The miracle didn’t happen when they understood. It happened when they obeyed.
Reflection Question:
Is there something Jesus has asked you to do that you’ve been hesitating on? What’s one step of simple obedience you can take today?
Prayer:
Jesus, help me trust Your voice—even when it doesn’t make sense. Give me the faith to respond quickly, and the courage to obey fully. Let me not miss what You want to do in me or through me. I believe simple obedience opens the door to extraordinary things. Amen.
